Finding the right sustainability marketing agency can feel like a challenge. With more organisations claiming to be purpose-led, it can be hard to know who genuinely understands the sustainability space and who can help you translate your mission into measurable growth. For founders and CEOs, particularly in sustainability start-ups and consultancies, the right agency plays a major strategic role in shaping success.

At Future Stories, we specialise in working with mission-driven B2B organisations in the sustainability sector. We help brands cut through the noise, connect with their audiences and grow with integrity.

Here’s how to choose the right agency for your business.

What to look for in a sustainability marketing agency

At its core, a good sustainability marketing strategy should align with your environmental and social impact goals. It avoids greenwashing and focuses on authenticity, helping you to build trust while also driving growth.

When evaluating potential partners, keep these criteria in mind:

Sector expertise

Does the marketing agency understand the sustainability landscape and its legislative drivers, from the packaging waste directives to ESG reporting frameworks? Ideally you want to choose an agency that focuses on sustainability as a main area and has case studies to support its work in this area on its website. Does the agency specialise in sustainability or does it have a variety of clients, including commercial clients with no obvious social or environmental purpose?

Marketing expertise in a sustainability context

When choosing an agency, it’s important to find one that appreciates current and future trends in marketing and how these can be applied in a sustainability context. Find out whether they have a good understanding of the Green Claims Code and how this might impact marketing – including marketing campaigns. What sort of language and images does the agency use to communicate sustainability concepts? There are a lot of overused stock images and phrases abounding within sustainability marketing. You want an agency that has a nuanced understanding of these issues.

Thought leadership focus

In B2B sectors, building visibility as an expert authority really matters. Look for a consultancy that can help with sustainability thought leadership, whether that’s creating long-form content, LinkedIn articles or scoping speaking opportunities.

Thought leadership is not just about putting content out there – it’s also about having a unique perspective or point of view that will provide valuable insights for others. Establish whether the agency can help you articulate your expert point of view in a compelling way. What’s their process for creating thought leadership and how do they link in with your company’s subject matter experts to create this content? Does the agency have a track record in this area and what results have they had?

Integrity

Avoid agencies that overpromise. The right partner will focus on results aligned with your mission, not just quick wins. They will have a clear process which they can articulate to you from the outset, so you know what you’re getting and when it will be delivered. They will also scale their approach to suit your specific needs, rather than sell you services you don’t actually need (which is in itself very wasteful). Be wary also of agencies that encourage you to overstate your own green credentials (see the second bullet point on the Green Claims Code).

Mission and values

Does the agency have any green credentials of its own? For example, is it working towards B Corp status? Does it evidence its own impact in this area by publishing an Impact Report, for example? How does the agency quantify success in this area? You can also ask whether the agency has policies and practices which support sustainability.

Questions to ask a sustainability marketing agency

You can narrow down your selection further by asking the agency some thoughtful, challenging questions. These will test their experience and help you decide whether they align with your mission.

Here are some questions you could bring up in your first conversation:

1. What’s your track record in sustainability and can you share results?

Ask for examples of measurable outcomes (e.g. qualified leads, partnership wins or investor engagement), not just a list of past clients.

2. How do you ensure marketing avoids greenwashing?

A good agency will understand the nuances of sustainability communication and be familiar with frameworks. Ask how they apply these in practice.

3. Can you describe your approach to developing thought leadership?

If visibility is important to you, ask how they help clients build a point of view, and what processes they use to create strategic content that builds credibility over time.

4. How do you work with in-house teams and senior leadership?

This will tell you whether they’re used to partnering strategically, not just delivering tactical outputs. It also shows how well they will adapt to your internal capacity and pace.

5. What do your clients say about working with you?

Look for social proof like testimonials, long-term relationships, and how they talk about collaboration in general. You could even ask them if they have any case studies to share with you there and then.

6. What values guide your work and how do you evidence them?

A values-led agency will have internal practices that reflect their beliefs, whether that’s sustainability policies, remote-first principles, or a commitment to inclusive hiring.

Getting started with the right partner

The right agency relationship starts with clarity. At Future Stories, we begin with a Marketing Compass audit to identify your biggest marketing gaps. This could be in messaging, brand, lead generation or a combination of them all. From there, we design a marketing strategy that balances purpose and growth, supported by practical delivery.

If you’re searching for a sustainability marketing agency that understands both the commercial pressures and the mission-driven goals of your business, we’d love to talk. Whether you need sustainability fractional CMO support, a rebrand or long-term content generation and campaign delivery, we’re here to help your organisation grow.
